A simple enough concept, though what does it actually mean? What does it look like? What does it feel like? How do you know when you have it?
Like just about everything else in life, there is no one answer. There is no standard, no right or wrong, no measure or metric to hold our lives up against to see if we’re attaining this goal of simplicity. It will look different for every person – what suits me and mine may not suit you and yours. For some it looks like decluttering and living with less. For others it looks like breaking the hold that technology has on them. For some, it’s purely aesthetic. We all have some notion of what simplicity means and how implementing it into our lives would be beneficial.
As I continue down this road to simplify my life, I’m gaining greater clarity on what exactly I want that to look like, both in the short term and further into the future. For us, it’s less about aesthetic (though, admittedly, I love a minimalist feel to most of my spaces) and more about connection and togetherness. Creating spaces and engaging in activities that allow us to do more together. Spaces where mess is encouraged, mistakes are made, life is colorful, and experiences are joyful. Less technology and automation. More hands-on and from scratch. Fewer things, more imagination. Fewer screens, more pages.
So far, in my family’s world, simplicity means a life where home is the center, outside distractions and flashy things are few, and slow and home/handmade beats instant gratification.
